Gambia Advances Security Sector Reforms with New Communication Strategy

The Gambia has taken a significant step forward in its security sector reform with the launch of a comprehensive communication strategy, designed to enhance transparency and build public trust. This initiative is a critical component of the National Security Policy formulated in 2019, which aims to align the country’s security practices with democratic principles and international standards.

Speaking at the validation workshop, the Deputy National Security Adviser (DNSA) Omar B. Bojang, highlighted the strategy’s role in promoting effective communication among key stakeholders. “Effective communication involves promoting applications, innovations, and information on key security issues,” said the DNSA. He emphasized that the strategy will ensure that the stories and achievements of the security forces are communicated clearly, fostering cooperation and trust.

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Resident Representative Mandisa Mashologu, a key partner in this initiative, praised the collaborative efforts involved in developing the strategy. “This event marks a significant milestone in our collective journey towards a secure, transparent, and resilient nation,” stated by the UNDP representative. Mandisa underscored the importance of timely, accurate information dissemination, especially in an age of pervasive social media.

The strategy aims to enhance the capacity of the Office of the National Security (ONS) to communicate effectively with various stakeholders, including government entities, civil society, development partners, and the public. It seeks to ensure that information is accessible and transparent, thereby preventing miscommunication and fostering a culture of accountability.

The DNSA reported notable progress in the security sector, stating, “There is no arbitrary arrest, no detention without trial, and no disappearance without trace.” These reforms align with international conventions and treaties, marking a significant improvement in the adherence to democratic practices and good governance.

The workshop provided an opportunity for stakeholders to review and enhance the document, ensuring it is fit for purpose. The strategy is designed to be a living document, continually updated with input from various sectors of society.

The initiative underscores the importance of a robust communication strategy in building a foundation for lasting and sustainable peace. It also highlights the critical role of community engagement and the involvement of civil society in the reform process.

As the Gambia continues its journey towards comprehensive security sector reform, the launch of this communication strategy represents a pivotal step in fostering public trust and ensuring the successful implementation of national security policies.
