ONS Hosts Capacity Building and Leadership Training in Partnership with UNDP and MDI

The Office of National Security, in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Management Development Institute (MDI), has successfully concluded a significant training program focused on capacity building, leadership, and change management for security personnel and public service staff.

The Deputy National Security Adviser (DNSA), Mr. Omar B. Bojang, in his opening remarks, emphasized the critical importance of this training program. “Our role is to coordinate and supervise security services effectively,” he noted. “This training, which integrates both security elements and public management leadership, is crucial for helping our new intakes understand the dynamics of security and public service. Building individual capacities allows us to deliver our best and coordinate our efforts more effectively.”

He further highlighted the comprehensive approach of the program, stating, “National security is everyone’s responsibility. It extends beyond physical security to include the essentials we rely on, like the food we eat and the water we drink.” He said. Therefore, this training helps bridge the gap between security personnel and public service staff, fostering a better understanding and collaboration.

UNDP Representative Mr. Sainey Ceesay, Head of Governance Cluster UNDP country office, The Gambia underscored the long-standing partnership with the Office of National Security and the importance of this training initiative. “Our partnership has been strong and supportive, and we are committed to continuing this collaboration. Change management is crucial in everyone’s work, and we encourage all participants to take this training seriously and learn from their peers.” He explained.

Alieu K. Jarju, the Director General MDI welcomed participants and stressed the importance of ongoing capacity development. “Capacity development is a key ingredient for national development,” he said. “It’s not just about building capacity but continuously developing it. This program is an excellent opportunity to enhance the practical skills and experiences necessary for effective performance in the security sector and beyond.” He further explained.

Mr. Landing Kinteh, Chief of Staff ONS, conveyed the National Security Adviser’s apologies for his absence due to pressing engagements but reiterated the importance of the training program. “This training is one of the most important activities undertaken by the Office of the National Security,” he stated. The ONS commitment to security sector reform and the restoration of public trust is evident in initiatives like this. The training on leadership and change management, sponsored by the UNDP, aims to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the security sector.

He concluded by expressing deep gratitude to UNDP and MDI for their support and partnership. “With your continuous support, the Security Sector Reform (SSR) program will undoubtedly be a success. We look forward to ongoing collaboration to achieve our shared goals.” He emphasized.

The training program has been addressed as a significant step towards improving the coordination and effectiveness of the national security apparatus, ensuring a more professional, apolitical, and efficient security sector that meets the needs of citizens and residents at large.
